Device support, plan features, activation steps and fees can change. Before buying, check the current terms from your device maker, carrier and plan provider.

When planning mobile service for Canada, separate two questions: whether your phone uses a physical SIM or an eSIM, and which services the plan includes: data, calls and texts. An eSIM is a digital SIM profile downloaded to a compatible device; a physical SIM is a card inserted into the phone. Neither format tells you by itself whether the plan includes a Canadian number, voice, SMS, hotspot use or roaming.

Illustrative photo: Ka Kit Pang, “Smart-phone.jpeg,” Wikimedia Commons (January 1, 2024); source file, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. Canadian prepaid and monthly plans also vary by carrier and plan. SIM format, prepaid versus monthly service and whether a phone number is included are separate questions.

Check three device conditions separately: whether the exact model and region support eSIM, whether the phone is unlocked, and whether the carrier supports that device and plan. Apple says an iPhone must be unlocked to use another carrier; “No SIM Restrictions” beside Carrier Lock in Settings is its unlocked indicator. Regional models can have exceptions. Android compatibility also varies by model, sales market and carrier; an EID or eSIM menu alone does not confirm the required bands, VoLTE or activation support. See Apple’s travel eSIM guide, Apple’s Dual SIM guide and Google Pixel SIM and eSIM compatibility information.

Check activation, roaming and route coverage before departure

Activation depends on the provider. Bell’s current instructions, for example, offer app, device-notification or QR-code setup routes depending on the device and account. Confirm that the plan is active and the device is compatible, then follow the carrier’s steps. Whether a QR code can be scanned again, when a profile’s validity begins and whether it can be downloaded again depend on the specific product; there is no universal eSIM deadline. See Bell’s eSIM setup instructions and Bell’s device compatibility requirements.

If you keep your home number available for calls or texts, you can select the travel plan for data, but roaming charges on the home line still depend on your home carrier and account terms. Apple warns that keeping both lines on can still result in roaming fees from the home carrier. Check how incoming and outgoing calls, SMS, voicemail, data roaming and Wi‑Fi Calling are billed and affected by your settings.

For postpaid wireless services covered by Canada’s Wireless Code, current CRTC rules set per-account limits in each monthly billing cycle: data overage charges must be suspended at $50, and data roaming charges at $100, unless the account holder or an authorized user consents to additional charges. Different Code sections apply to prepaid services. The CRTC has confirmed that the $100 roaming cap also covers plans that let customers use a device abroad as they would at home in Canada. This does not mean a plan includes Canadian service at no cost, and Canadian rules do not govern a home carrier in another country. Some roaming notification requirements added by the CRTC in 2026 take effect on April 13, 2027; they are not active yet. See the CRTC’s simplified Wireless Code and CRTC policy 2026-67 and its effective date.

Finally, check coverage along your actual route. Conditions differ between city centres, suburbs, highways and national parks; a coverage map is not a guarantee for every road segment. Download maps, accommodation details, tickets and important contacts for offline use. Compare the total trip cost of roaming with the eSIM or local plan rather than assuming a per-gigabyte rate predicts your bill.

Write down your exact phone model, sales region, unlock status and eSIM support.

Decide whether you need a Canadian number, regular calls, SMS, bank codes or hotspot use.

Check included services, Canadian coverage, validity, activation and restrictions for the exact plan.

Ask the carrier about bands, VoLTE, device eligibility and its QR-code or app process.

Choose the line for mobile data and confirm how your home line’s roaming is billed.

Check coverage for your route and save essential information offline.

For trip planning, start with our Canada travel hub.
