Browse along Bloor Street West, then head north for houses or south towards Harbord Street and the University of Toronto. These places are close together but do not all belong to one neighbourhood. Choose a focus instead of trying to fit every museum, bookshop and film into a fixed half-day itinerary.

Annex houses, by SimonP, 2008-06-14; CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia thumbnail. Historical residential streetscape, not evidence of current building condition, businesses or access.

The Annex Residents’ Association’s architectural history describes an area from Bloor Street north to the railway corridor, between Avenue Road and Bathurst Street. Dupont Street is a useful northern orientation point but should not replace the railway boundary stated by the association. This guide uses that community definition; municipal statistical areas, business districts and tourist maps need not use identical boundaries.

South of Bloor, the area between Bathurst and Spadina down to College Street is the community served by the Harbord Village Residents’ Association, as defined in its constitution. The university’s St. George campus offers a southern and southeastern extension. To the east is the Bloor-Yorkville business district; west of Bathurst, the Korea Town BIA follows Bloor to Christie. Nearby places below are identified separately rather than all being called Annex businesses.

Choose a station and walking direction for your destination

For the western stretch of Bloor, start from Line 2 at Bathurst Station. For the Spadina intersection, check that your destination is the Line 2 section of Spadina Station. Neither is a dedicated attraction stop, and your journey from your accommodation may require transfers. A downtown starting point does not guarantee a direct ride; subway, streetcar and bus services are distinct.

Spadina serves Lines 1 and 2, but the TTC explicitly says the passage between them is not barrier-free. An accessible Line 2 section does not make its Line 1 section accessible. For an accessible interchange, the TTC directs passengers to St. George Station, where the Bedford Road entrance provides elevator access to the platforms. Check elevator and service notices for your travel day. A single accessibility symbol beside a station name does not establish that every entrance, platform or transfer is available.

One flexible route runs east along Bloor from Bathurst to the bookshops, then turns north near Spadina for residential streets or south to Harbord Street. It can be divided into shorter walks; it is not a promise that everything takes two hours. If a film or museum is your priority, anchor the day around its screening or admission arrangements and browse before or afterwards. Plan your return from the final stop rather than necessarily retracing your steps.

On the residential streets to the north, look at combinations of brick, stone, gables and porches. The association’s history describes an “Annex Style” mixing Romanesque and Queen Anne Revival features, with examples on Madison Avenue. That does not make every building the same age, style or use. View the houses from public sidewalks; do not enter private yards, steps or porches or assume occupied homes are visitor attractions.

Plan bookshops, cinema and nearby venues separately

BMV Books’ Annex location is still listed at 471 Bloor Street West, with current location and opening-hours information. Its company history describes second-hand, discounted and newly published books among its stock. Compare condition, edition and the marked price rather than assuming every used book is cheapest. An unverified claim to be Canada’s largest is unnecessary. Ask about stock if travelling for a particular title; an operating store listing does not guarantee availability.

Bakka-Phoenix Books is at 84 Harbord Street, a southern extension of this walk rather than a location within the Bloor-north Annex boundary used here. Its About Us page confirms a science-fiction and fantasy focus, and its contact and hours page confirms the address. Keep the business name as published when navigating. There is no need to justify a visit through “oldest” or “best” rankings. Author events have their own dates, venues and participation requirements; past appearances are not current events.

For a film after the walk, consult Hot Docs Cinema’s current programme. It lists 506 Bloor Street West and features documentaries, special events and series; the operator’s contact page confirms the same address. This is a cinema with scheduled screenings, not an exhibition space that is always free to enter. Check the date, title, language or subtitles and exchange or refund terms when booking, then fit the walk around your chosen screening.

Possible extension

Location or type

Separate arrangements

ROM

Southeast of the walk, at 100 Queen’s Park.

Choose admission and exhibitions for your date; check the entrance.

University of Toronto area

St. George campus and Philosopher’s Walk.

Separate outdoor walking from building entry and respect access controls.

Yorkville or Koreatown

Yorkville lies east; Koreatown follows Bloor west beyond Bathurst.

Choose shops or a meal rather than assuming both fit one easy route.

ROM’s visitor directions give the address as 100 Queen’s Park. At the time of checking, the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal entrance on Bloor Street is temporarily closed for OpenROM construction, while the Weston Entrance on Queen’s Park remains open. Do not navigate solely from an old entrance photograph. The visitor information also notes partial gallery closures and date- and ticket-dependent pricing. A neighbourhood walk does not include museum admission, and complimentary or discounted entry has specific eligibility rules.

Near the university, Philosopher’s Walk provides an outdoor connection between Bloor Street and Hoskin Avenue. The facilities department’s article supports its location, not a guarantee that every gate is open around the clock; adapt to construction, closures or event controls on site. The St. George campus tour page focuses on undergraduate university life and explicitly excludes residence interiors. A city walk, a reserved tour and permission to enter classrooms or residences are different things. Do not assume all university buildings are open to tourists.

Place a coffee or meal between your main stops, choosing by dietary needs, meal type and the day’s menu rather than claims that “all the locals love it”. Spending depends on food, books, films and exhibitions; this guide does not impose a single meal budget or ticket price. If you need rest, smoother surfaces or shelter from rain or snow, shorten outdoor sections and ask the intended business about its entrance and seating. An ordinary neighbourhood walk is not unconditionally safe or accessible.

With limited time, one bookshop and a residential street may be enough; add the cinema or one nearby venue for a longer visit. After an evening event, check the TTC journey for your actual departure time and keep track of your belongings. The Toronto travel guide and Canada attractions overview offer other connections. Build the route around interests and transport rather than a compulsory list of stops.

Explore the Annex along Bloor Street West, distinguish neighbouring districts, and check bookshop addresses, accessible TTC transfers and the current ROM entrance.

date_time: 2026-06-17 | sports_result: 2026-06 / 紀錄 | superlative_record: 官方 / 最大 | event_status: 免費 | opening_hours_fare: 票價 / 開放時間
["https://www.theara.org/architectural_history","https://harbordvillage.com/about/constitution/","https://www.bloor-yorkville.com/about-bia/","https://koreatownto.com/about-korea-town-bia","https://www.ttc.ca/subway-stations/bathurst-station","https://www.ttc.ca/subway-stations/spadina-station","https://www.ttc.ca/subway-stations/st-george-station","https://www.bmvbooks.com/pages/location-annex","https://www.bmvbooks.com/pages/our-story","https://www.bakkaphoenixbooks.com/about-us","https://www.bakkaphoenixbooks.com/contact-hours","https://hotdocs.ca/whats-on","https://hotdocs.ca/contact-us","https://www.rom.on.ca/visit/location-parking","https://www.rom.on.ca/visit/visitor-information","https://www.fs.utoronto.ca/news/top-spots-to-soak-up-summer-on-campus/","https://apply.adm.utoronto.ca/portal/StGeorgeCampusTours
[42
156,275,143,167,281
773
781
809
828
post-1277","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-toronto","tag-156","tag-275","tag-143","tag-167","tag-281","lc_primary_section-destination-guides","lc_location-toronto","lc_topic-attractions","lc_freshness-evergreen
["GET
