It runs about 298 km through highland, coastal and community landscapes. This guide covers route planning, entry rules for Cape Breton Highlands National Park, the Skyline Trail and driving precautions. Times and suggested stops are planning references, not guarantees. Access, fees and road conditions can change, so check official notices before departure. Tourism Nova Scotia.

Tourism Nova Scotia describes the Cabot Trail as a 298 km loop and estimates about 4.5 hours to drive it from Baddeck without stops. That estimate excludes sightseeing, weather and traffic, so it is not a promised trip time. The province also publishes a four-to-five-day sample itinerary, one way to spread out hikes, coastal look-offs and community visits; it is not a minimum or required schedule. You can plan clockwise or counterclockwise—there is no single direction for every starting point. The official example goes counterclockwise. Use the Canada map to orient yourself, then choose stops based on your start, overnight plans and what is open. Tourism Nova Scotia on direction and distance · official itinerary example.

The Skyline Trail is in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Parks Canada lists an approximately 6.5 km return walk (about two hours) and an 8.2 km loop (about 2.5 to three hours). Time depends on route, pace and stops. For the 2026 season, a timed parking reservation is required from June 26 through October 25. Parking and reservation charges are CAD $13 online or $15 by phone, separate from park admission. Arrive no earlier than 10 minutes before and no later than one hour after your selected start time; a late arrival can forfeit that reservation. On this article’s October 13, 2026 review date, the season’s window was still active; check the official page for availability and instructions before going. Parks Canada’s Skyline Trail page.

The Canada Strong Pass free-admission period ended September 7, 2026; Parks Canada says regular fees resumed September 8. The park currently lists daily admission at CAD $10 for adults, $8.75 for seniors and $19.50 for a family or group of up to seven arriving in one vehicle. Youth aged 17 and under are free. The entry notice separately lists an exception for travelling along the Cabot Trail without stopping in the park. Fees and entry rules can change: check the park fee schedule and entry-pass notice before travel; do not rely on an expired price list.

Coastal and high-elevation weather can change quickly, and mobile coverage in the park is unreliable. Parks Canada advises drivers to follow posted limits, slow down after dark or in heavy rain and wind, and watch for moose crossing roads, especially around dusk. For winter travel, check Nova Scotia 511, park closure notices and the forecast first. Stop only in designated areas, and base plans on current trail, service and parking notices. Park safety guidance · winter-road guidance.
