With Canada, the United States and Mexico set to co-host in 2026, I wanted to pull together the thread of these 92 years and 22 editions into an easy read, so you can fill in the background before warming up to watch the matches. Put simply, this history is the story of \u201ceight nations taking turns at the top\u201d\u2014Brazil with five titles, Germany and Italy with four each, Argentina with three, France and Uruguay with two each, and England and Spain with one apiece; to this day no ninth champion has emerged. The 1934 and 1938 editions saw <strong>Italy<\/strong> win back-to-back, becoming the first side in history to successfully defend the title; the tournament was then suspended for 12 years because of the Second World War. After the war, the 1950 edition returned to Brazil, where the hosts lost the decisive final match to Uruguay\u2014a defeat Brazilians call the \u201cMaracanazo,\u201d which remains one of the most famous upsets in football history.<\/p>\n<p>1958 marked the start of the Brazilian dynasty. A 17-year-old <strong>Pel\u00e9<\/strong> burst onto the scene, and Brazil claimed their first-ever title in Sweden with a 5\u20132 win, then defended it in Chile in 1962 and won a third in Mexico in 1970, permanently retaining the Jules Rimet Trophy of that era. The 1966 World Cup was in England, where the hosts beat West Germany 4\u20132 to take their only title\u2014still the high point for the England men\u2019s team. In the 1970s and 1980s, football entered an era defined by superstars: in 1974 the Netherlands\u2019 \u201cTotal Football\u201d led by \u201cthe Flying Dutchman\u201d Cruyff dazzled the world, only to lose the final to hosts West Germany; in 1978 Argentina won their first title at home; in 1986 <strong>Maradona<\/strong> single-handedly produced both the \u201cHand of God\u201d and the \u201cGoal of the Century\u201d in Mexico, all but carrying Argentina to the summit on his own.<\/p>\n<p>After entering the 1990s, the map of champions gradually broadened. In the 1994 US World Cup final, Brazil and Italy played out a 0\u20130 draw and the result was settled by a penalty shoot-out\u2014the first time a World Cup final was decided on penalties. In 1998 France thrashed Brazil 3\u20130 on home soil, with Zidane leading them to their first-ever title; the 2002 Korea\u2013Japan World Cup was the first held in Asia and the first co-hosted by two nations, with Brazil crowned for a fifth time. Since the start of the 21st century, in 2006 Italy beat France in a penalty shoot-out (Zidane\u2019s infamous headbutt and red card came in this very match), and in 2010 Spain won their first-ever title by beating the Netherlands on Iniesta\u2019s extra-time winner in South Africa, which also made South Africa the first African nation to host a World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent three editions were just as gripping. In 2014 Germany beat Argentina 1\u20130 after extra time on Brazilian soil, lifting their first title since German reunification; in 2018 a France side led by Mbapp\u00e9 beat Croatia 4\u20132 in Russia for a second title; and the 2022 Qatar World Cup was hailed by many as the \u201cgreatest final of all time\u201d\u2014Messi and Mbapp\u00e9 traded goals, the two sides finished 3\u20133 after 120 minutes, and Argentina ultimately prevailed in the penalty shoot-out, with Messi completing the final piece of his career. In addition, 2026 will be the first World Cup ever co-hosted by three nations and the first expanded to 48 teams, setting new highs for both the number of matches and the scale of the event.
