Illustrative image of the species, not evidence of today’s catch or sales.

The spot prawn (Pandalus platyceros) is found along British Columbia’s coast. When planning a seasonal seafood stop around Vancouver, separate the general fishing season from the question of whether a particular boat or restaurant has prawns today. The Steveston Harbour Authority lists spot prawns among species commonly sold from May to June. Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s (DFO) 2026/27 management plan says the commercial trap fishery generally closes coastwide by the end of June, but dates and area closures vary. These are planning references, not a promise that a restaurant, vessel or market will have prawns in stock.

For 2026, a DFO notice set the commercial trap fishery closure at 7 p.m. on June 12 for specified South Coast and Fraser River areas. That is a dated notice for a particular commercial fishery and region; it does not mean every BC fishery, recreational harvest or retail sale ended on that date. Before travelling, check current DFO notices and the dock or seller’s own update. If the next season’s dates have not been announced, avoid building a fixed itinerary around last year’s schedule.

How to check dockside availability

At Steveston Public Fish Sales Float, vessels sell seafood directly. The harbour authority describes spot prawns as a May–June seasonal product and notes that seafood frozen at sea may be available year-round. It does not guarantee daily spot prawn sales or set one price, payment method, opening time or reservation policy for every vessel. Check the wharf’s sales information and the individual vessel’s current notice before setting out. If no daily update is posted, do not treat a prawn purchase as a confirmed stop. The harbour authority says prices and quantities are available only at the sales float, not by phone or online; confirm the product and transaction details on site.

The Spot Prawn Festival is another seasonal option, but its date and program are announced by the organizer each year. The official site lists the 2026 event on May 31, with free activities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and separate ticketed food events. Those dates and ticket details have passed and should not be used for a future visit. Check the organizer’s website for the next date, tickets, venue and travel arrangements once posted.

Spot prawns can be steamed, boiled or used in other cooked dishes; seasoning and recipes are a matter of taste. Health Canada lists 74°C as the safe internal temperature for shrimp and other crustaceans, and advises cleaning utensils after raw food handling to prevent cross-contamination. This guide does not treat wild or raw prawns as automatically safe, and smell or appearance alone cannot establish safety.

DFO’s management plan describes seasonal and area closures, size limits and release rules for egg-bearing prawns in the commercial trap fishery. Those are fishery-management measures; by themselves, they do not certify every product as sustainable or establish that it carries a named eco-label. Confirm the species, origin, handling and seller details when buying.
