Opening dates are current targets and can change. Check official project notices and trip information before travelling.

Metro Vancouver has two SkyTrain extensions under construction and a separate potential extension to UBC that remains in planning. They are often conflated, especially in claims that the Broadway Subway will take trains all the way to UBC. To assess an update, check the route endpoint, project stage and date of the notice; a construction milestone, a service target and an unapproved proposal are different things.

Two extensions under construction, with service targets in 2027 and 2029

The Broadway Subway extends the Millennium Line west from VCC–Clark to the Broadway and Arbutus area. The 5.7-kilometre extension adds six underground stations. In a September 21, 2026 update, the B.C. government said trackwork was expected to finish that week and passenger service was scheduled for fall 2027. The planned trip from VCC–Clark to Arbutus is 11 minutes. Completing trackwork does not mean trains are open to passengers; system testing and trial running remain part of the process. The line ends at Arbutus, not UBC. B.C. update on the Broadway Subway milestone.

South of the Fraser River, the project now officially called the Dave Barrett Extension (formerly Surrey–Langley SkyTrain) extends the Expo Line 16 kilometres from King George Station to Langley City Centre, with eight stations. On September 21, 2026, the province reported that guideway construction was about 65% complete, foundations and columns were more than 95% complete, and work was under way at all eight stations. Service is expected in 2029. These figures describe progress on that announcement date, and 2029 is a target year rather than a guaranteed opening day. TransLink describes the Broadway and Dave Barrett projects together as adding more than 20 kilometres of SkyTrain by 2029, alongside the trains, power, station and operations work needed to support them. B.C. update on the Dave Barrett Extension and TransLink’s SkyTrain Expansion Program.

The UBC line is still a potential project; use current routes and fare information

A further extension west from Arbutus to UBC is a separate proposal. TransLink describes the Millennium Line UBC Extension as a potential connection under study; its stated next step is to work with senior governments and partners toward a full business case. The available project information does not establish fully funded construction, a construction start or a confirmed opening year. The 2027 Broadway service target therefore cannot be applied to UBC. For a near-term trip to campus, check current bus and transfer options. TransLink’s UBC extension planning page.

For a visit to Vancouver, future construction plans are not today’s operating routes. Metro Vancouver has three fare zones. Bus trips are always one zone, while SkyTrain and SeaBus fares depend on the zones crossed and the time and day of travel. Cross-zone trips after 6:30 p.m. on weekdays, and trips on weekends and B.C. statutory holidays, are charged at a one-zone fare. TransLink’s fare page lists current prices, the airport AddFare and a fare calculator. Prices can change, so check the rules for your travel date instead of relying on older figures. TransLink fares and zones.

A construction update and the service a passenger can use on a particular day are different kinds of information. Station works, temporary traffic arrangements and bus connections may be updated separately. Near a work site, do not infer entrances or walking routes from a future-line diagram; check the official trip planner for your date.

The three statuses to remember are: Broadway is nearing completion, with passenger service targeted for fall 2027; the Dave Barrett Extension remains under construction, with service expected in 2029; and the UBC extension remains a potential project without a confirmed opening year.
