A city’s monthly average cannot replace the forecast for the day. Check wind chill and warnings as well as air temperature. Environment and Climate Change Canada explains that wind chill describes how cold wind feels on skin; it is not a thermometer reading. Air at −20°C with a wind chill of −30 is still −20°C. Identify indoor places to warm up along walking and transit routes.

Original AI illustration by Let’s Canada; not a product photograph or a test of cold-weather performance.

Choose clothing for its purpose rather than starting with a brand list. Health Canada recommends layers with a wind-resistant outer layer, warm socks, gloves, a hat and scarf, and changing wet clothing promptly. Try outerwear over the layers you will use; check cuffs, fastenings and the fit of boots with socks. Keep spare dry socks accessible. A temperature printed on a product is not a promise of comfort for every wearer, wind speed, moisture level and activity.

Do not dismiss marked confusion or abnormal movement in someone exposed to cold as ordinary tiredness. Health Canada’s hypothermia guidance says severe hypothermia needs immediate medical attention: call 911 or the local emergency number. Stop the outing and seek help. Hand warmers are not a substitute for emergency care.

For a road trip, check the route and vehicle. BC’s winter-driving guidance sets requirements on signed routes generally from October 1 through April 30; selected routes end March 31. Check DriveBC before departure and obey roadside signs. A legal winter tire for a passenger vehicle needs M+S or the three-peak mountain/snowflake marking and at least 3.5 mm of tread. Meeting the minimum does not make every storm suitable for driving. Ask the rental company about the tires actually fitted and your intended route.

The SAAQ rule in Quebec has a different scope: December 1 through March 15 inclusive for ordinary motor vehicles registered in Quebec and passenger vehicles rented in Quebec, subject to statutory exceptions. It is not simply a requirement on designated roads. Do not assume BC’s minimum M+S standard is Quebec’s standard. Before renting across provinces, confirm registration, tire type, pickup and return arrangements, and route requirements.

At a hotel or short-term rental, ask how the heating works, whether its cost is included and whom to contact if it fails. Natural Resources Canada’s home-energy guide says a suitable thermostat setback can save energy, with exceptions for some slow-response hydronic systems and heat pumps. Neither “always set 18°C when out” nor “reheating always uses more energy” is a universal rule. Follow equipment and accommodation instructions while meeting occupants’ needs. Spreading bills across the year does not itself reduce energy use.

If your mood becomes significantly worse in winter, discuss assessment and care with a health professional. NIMH’s seasonal affective disorder guidance reports mixed evidence for vitamin D treatment and cautions about certain eye conditions and medicines with light therapy. Supplements and a fixed daily light-box session are not a universal winter routine.
