This article is a historical comparison of U.S. and Canadian event airspace restrictions, not a no-fly notice still active in October 2026. The United States deployed Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) for specified matches and events; Canada introduced particular measures around Toronto and Vancouver. Aircraft categories, geography, timing and approving authorities differed. One country’s radius, dates or penalties cannot be transferred to the other, and an old article cannot determine whether a flight is lawful today.

The FAA World Cup Flight Advisory prohibited all aircraft operations within a 3-nautical-mile radius and up to 3,000 feet above ground level (AGL) near specified match venues unless otherwise authorised by air traffic control. This was not limited to drones, and the height was not an altitude above sea level. Specified fan events had unmanned aircraft system (UAS) restrictions within a 1-nautical-mile radius and up to 1,000 feet AGL. Exact dates, times and conditions were governed by NOTAMs, rather than a universal three-hour window before and after matches or one-hour extensions around every fan event.

The FAA’s event safety plan warned that a standard airspace authorisation or remote-pilot qualification did not permit flight during an active TFR. The advisory’s UAS exceptions required advance approval, particular defence, security, rescue or significant urgent governmental missions, and compliance with other aviation rules; a media credential alone was not sufficient. The FAA listed potential civil penalties up to US$75,000 per violation, criminal fines up to US$100,000, confiscation, prosecution or arrest. These were possible U.S. consequences, not automatic fines in every case or Canadian penalties.

Transport Canada’s June 2026 Drone Zone described RPAS restricted airspace in Toronto and Vancouver, with access limited to approved military, police and other RPAS directly supporting the tournament. RPAS includes the aircraft, control station and the systems required for operation, not just a consumer drone or its controller. The pre-event rules did not establish a general exemption for tourists, certificate holders or ordinary filming, and the U.S. three-mile venue rule cannot define the Canadian boundaries.

A NAV CANADA post-event report dated July 22 confirmed 13 matches in the two Canadian cities between June 12 and July 7. Associated airspace measures were implemented and lifted as planned, with Prior Permission Required procedures for business and general aviation. That Canadian match window was not the period for every U.S. match or fan event. The report also described routine volume-driven arrival sequencing in Vancouver and one weather-related ground stop in Toronto on match days. Drone restrictions therefore meant neither a shutdown of all commercial flights nor a guarantee that scheduled flights would be unaffected.

Read airspace maps together with permission requirements. The official NAV Drone user guide warns that some relevant NOTAMs may not appear on the map. Operators must review full notices for the aerodrome or flight information region through NAV CANADA’s CFPS, checking start and end times, schedules and conditions. A map colour, ordinary controlled-airspace permission or the boundary of a past match cannot replace an assessment of the actual operation. For U.S. flights, check current FAA TFRs, NOTAMs and applicable authorisations.

For a Vancouver trip today, locate the destination in the Vancouver city guide, then check aircraft category, operating site, current airspace notices and take-off or landing rules separately. Commercial passengers need current airline and airport information; historical drone bans are neither a cancellation forecast nor a punctuality guarantee. The temporary World Cup measures illustrate different layers of regulation. They do not authorise a flight anywhere today.

Review historical U.S. and Canadian World Cup airspace rules, aircraft versus drones, ground-relative heights and authorisation.
