This is a review of their conditions, not another kickoff countdown. FIFA’s Qatar overview records November 20–December 18, 2022: one host country, eight stadiums, 32 teams and 64 matches. The 2026 tournament and ticket sales ended July 19; the official ticket FAQ says there are no further purchase opportunities. Comparisons need to keep those different scopes clear.

Canada’s playing record in Qatar and its cities’ hosting capacity are different subjects. Canada Soccer’s 2022 review records Alphonso Davies heading in Tajon Buchanan’s cross after 67 seconds against Croatia in the second group match: Canada’s first men’s World Cup goal. Defeats to Belgium, Croatia and Morocco nevertheless brought group-stage elimination. This was a men’s-team milestone, not the first goal across all Canadian teams; playing experience alone does not demonstrate easier city operations.

Using an existing Toronto stadium did not remove the need for major work. The City and MLSE’s March 24, 2026 completion announcement lists temporary expansion to 45,000 seats, pitch and player-area work, broadcast facilities and other improvements at Toronto Stadium / BMO Field. Temporary seating was to be removed after the tournament while other upgrades remained; 45,000 is not a standing capacity for every event today. The reported project cost was CAD 157.9 million, including 132.9 million from the City and 25 million from MLSE—not the cost of Toronto’s entire hosting programme.

Vancouver also needed more than simply opening an existing venue. FIFA’s May 18 BC Place announcement records accessibility, technology, hospitality and dressing-room improvements, with a hybrid grass pitch installed. It places Vancouver among 16 host cities for the 48-team tournament, with two Canadian host cities and seven BC Place matches. Installation for the tournament does not establish that the pitch stayed permanently or that later events use identical seating and admission arrangements.

Geography provides a supported distinction. FIFA calls Qatar the most compact edition since 1930, whereas Canada’s venues were in Vancouver and Toronto. Travellers following both cities need to separate local stadium access from intercity travel instead of transferring a compact-venue, multiple-matches-in-one-day idea directly to Canada. That is a planning inference from the layout, not proof that Qatar had no transport problems or that flying is Canada’s only travel mode.

Operational observations need their own measurements. TransLink’s July 13 review estimates more than 600,000 additional boardings across seven Vancouver match days; nearly 1.4 million on June 24 was the system’s total for that day. A boarding is an entry onto a vehicle, so transfers can count again. These were preliminary estimates compared with a projected non-World-Cup baseline drawn from recent patterns and the previous year’s same weekday. Additional boardings are not distinct visitors or evidence that everyone travelled without queues.

The documents show that existing venues still required upgrades and that geography shaped journeys. They do not prove Canada’s overall preparation was cheaper or easier than Qatar’s. Comparing total costs needs matching budget boundaries and final accounts; assessing city operations needs more than team results. Temporary transport, ticketing and entry arrangements are historical. For a new event, use a new venue and transport announcement.
