A physical SIM and an eSIM are different ways of supplying the SIM. A Canadian number, calls, texts and prepaid or postpaid billing depend on the service plan. “eSIM for visitors, physical SIM for long stays” is not a reliable selection rule.

Apple’s international-travel guidance describes local-carrier prepaid and postpaid options, many with local numbers. The Rogers eSIM activation process also lets customers select an existing number when changing SIMs: eSIM does not mean data-only. A physical card likewise does not establish included calls, international calling or verification texts. If you need account verification, check the institution’s accepted number and messaging requirements; a local number alone guarantees nothing.

Comparison

Physical SIM

eSIM

Provisioning

A compatible card and SIM tray.

A profile downloaded to a supported device, using the carrier’s app, QR code or another supported method.

Number and services

Check the plan for voice, texts and data.

Also plan-dependent: data-only or service with a local number and calls.

Two lines

Can work alongside an eSIM on supported phones.

Some devices support two active eSIMs, subject to model, region and carrier.

Changing phones

Check the new phone’s tray, size and network compatibility.

Follow the provider’s transfer or activation process; do not assume unlimited reuse of an old QR code.

Google’s Pixel dual-SIM guide describes physical-plus-eSIM and supported dual-eSIM combinations, with carrier and purchase-region restrictions. The old fixed 3–30-day price card no longer establishes what is available today, so it is replaced with comparison criteria. Airalo’s data and validity document explains that a limited allowance is shared across its whole validity period, not replenished every day; its unlimited products can have specified speed reductions. Those are provider-specific terms, not universal rules.

Canadian protections also have a defined scope. CRTC decision 2026-43, effective June 12, 2026, covers individual and small-business mobile customers. It prohibits early cancellation fees where no subsidized device is provided and defines prohibited activation or modification fees, while distinguishing expressly chosen extra products or services and reasonable physical installation at a customer’s premises. It does not erase unpaid service, every device payment or other bills.

The Code’s trial, unlocking and billing provisions do not create an unconditional refund for most plans. Its minimum 15-day trial concerns contracts with early cancellation fees and has usage and device-return conditions; customers identifying as having a disability receive at least 30 days and increased usage allowances. Covered providers must supply unlocked devices and unlock their locked devices on request without charge. Overseas-carrier requirements need separate checking. Data-charge protections have account, billing-cycle and additional-consent conditions, not a universal ceiling on every call, text or bill. Updates expressly dated April 13, 2027 are not yet in force.

Check compatibility, validity and both lines’ settings

First confirm support for the intended carrier’s eSIM, then check whether the phone is unlocked. These are separate requirements. Apple identifies purchase-region and model differences as well as the need for an unlocked phone when using another carrier. “Every iPhone after XS” is not a worldwide guarantee. Nor does Rogers’ support prove that every Canadian carrier and plan supports eSIM.

Read the validity policy before choosing an installation date. Airalo identifies both supported-network connection and installation as possible start events. Do not automatically install the day before departure or treat “installed” as proof of working service or an unstarted clock. Check the purchased product’s installation-code deadline, reinstallation and transfer terms; do not invent a universal number of days or reuse attempts.

Use a stable connection and the device and provider’s instructions, and label your lines clearly. Airalo’s iOS guide separates installation, connection, APN changes when required, and data roaming turned on or off as instructed for that eSIM. Neither manual APN entry nor roaming-on is universal. Rogers may require account access, text verification or an identity check; a travel provider’s procedure cannot simply replace it.

On arrival, check the default data, voice and text lines and automatic data switching. Google and the Airalo guide explain line selection; prevent switching back to your home line if you do not intend to use its data. Apple warns that leaving the home line active can still incur home-carrier roaming charges. A travel data allowance does not pay the other line’s calls, texts or roaming bill, and receiving a verification text does not make all usage free.

Test web access and, if included, the calls or texts you need. If service fails, check the selected line, supported network and connection instructions before contacting the provider. Avoid repeatedly deleting an eSIM without understanding reinstallation terms. Save offline maps, addresses and support details before departure as a fallback, not a connectivity guarantee.
