These are examples of different jurisdictions, not a method of acquiring legality or tenancy rights merely by reaching a particular number of nights.

BC’s principal-residence guidance updated in September 2026 applies in specified areas and lists community, land and accommodation exceptions. Local rules may be stricter and coverage can change annually. A model permitted in one city therefore cannot automatically be transferred elsewhere, and an online listing is not proof of compliance. Check provincial and municipal registration or permit requirements against the listing’s address and number; resolve uncertainty with the accommodation provider and authority.

For a longer stay, distinguish holiday accommodation from an actual tenancy. BC’s guidance on housing relationships says vacation or travel accommodation is generally outside its Residential Tenancy Act, but a genuine tenancy may be covered. Relevant factors include the agreed term, exclusive possession, a primary permanent home and length of occupancy. A platform booking, hotel room or “30-day monthly rental” label does not settle the question. This is BC guidance; other provinces require their own checks.

If work, school or long-term housing is undecided, consider an affordable temporary stay with time for viewings and moving. Seven to fourteen days is a planning example, not a promise that you will find housing within that period or a rule for every newcomer. Include extension costs, cancellation, luggage and a fallback if the search takes longer. A verified arrangement that suits you does not automatically need to be rejected because you are still overseas.

An in-person viewing or a trustworthy live video call can help check the room, address, facilities and handover. Record the landlord or manager’s identity, payment items and start and end dates in the agreement. These checks reduce information gaps without guaranteeing protection from fraud or replacing local law. Verify pressure to pay or a mismatch between payee and agreement through an established contact route before sending money.

Compare the full stay, payment terms and transport

Calculate the room rate across the stay and add applicable disclosed taxes, cleaning, service charges, parking, meals and selected extras. A fixed cleaning charge spread across fewer nights can change the comparison; it does not establish that short lets are usually more expensive. For a monthly stay, include minimum terms, early departure costs and deposits rather than relying on an attractive daily equivalent. No national price band is offered without maintainable like-for-like quotes.

Payment arrangements depend on the reservation. Booking.com’s payment and cancellation terms distinguish platform-arranged payment from property collection, including booking-time charges, pre-authorisation, arrival or departure payment. Check the confirmation’s payee, currency, timing and prepayment policy. Paying at the property is not itself suspicious; an unexpected transfer request that conflicts with the reservation needs verification. Free cancellation can have a deadline. Read cancellation, no-show and refund conditions separately and retain the confirmation.

Airbnb’s guidance on additional charges generally keeps reservation payments on its platform, with specified exceptions for properly disclosed mandatory fees, some taxes and certain hotel charges. Most hosts cannot simply demand an off-platform deposit or extra payment; the exceptions do not authorize every private transfer. Compare a request with the checkout breakdown, listing and platform rules, then contact support through the official app or existing reservation instead of relying only on a link in a message.

Reviews can inform questions about arrival, noise and cleaning. Look for recent, specific comments about the relevant room; a score cannot replace the address, facilities or cancellation terms. Confirm step-free access, lifts and bed requirements directly rather than inferring them from “family-friendly” or a lobby photo. For late arrival, establish actual reception or self-check-in hours.

Judge location by real destinations, outward and return journeys, transfers, walking needs and luggage, including transport in the budget. Neither a central or stadium-adjacent room nor a cheaper outlying room is automatically best value. The 2026 World Cup ended on July 19, as confirmed by the Canadian government’s closing statement. Tournament demand is historical context, not a reason to rush a booking today or predict guaranteed price rises.

Before booking, recheck names, dates, party size, full address, arrival method, total price and the cancellation deadline; keep relevant written commitments.
