"It's hard to find work in Canada" — you've surely heard that more than once.
This isn't entirely a lie—but it isn't the whole truth either. Canada's workplace culture, job-search process, and what you're used to in Taiwan or Hong Kong differ greatly. What's truly hard isn't the work itself, butNot knowing the rules.
From the perspective of someone who has "just landed," this article walks you through the complete process of job hunting in Canada, the most effective platforms, and the pitfalls most people fall into.
The State of Canada's Labour Market in 2026
According to the latest data from Statistics Canada, Canada's unemployment rate in 2026 is around 6.8%, and the overall job market leans toward an employer's market (a buyer's market). But it varies greatly by industry and province:
- Tech industry:After the big layoffs of 2024–2025, things picked up slightly in 2026, but are still below the 2022 low
- Healthcare and nursing:Nationwide shortage, with strong demand
- Construction, engineering:Continued infrastructure investment, with plenty of open positions
- Food service and retail:Plenty of entry-level positions, with pay rising as the minimum wage goes up
- Finance and accounting:Steady demand; Canadian certification (CPA, etc.) is a plus
2026 Minimum Wage by Province
- BC:$18.25/hour (increasing as of June 2026)
- Ontario:$17.60/hour (rising to $17.95 in October 2026)
- Alberta:CAD 15.00/hour (unchanged since 2018)
- Quebec:$16.10/hour (effective 2025/05/01) → already raised to $16.60 (2026/05/01)
- App delivery driver (BC):$21.89/hour (calculated on engaged time)
The most effective job-search platforms
1. Indeed.ca
Canada's largest all-around job platform, covering every industry and region. Once you've set your location, job title, and salary range, you can turn on email alerts and be notified the moment new positions appear.
? Tips for using it:Indeed's resume builder lets you apply directly on the platform, but many positions are posted only on Indeed and not on the company's own website — so check back regularly.
2. LinkedIn
Must-do tasks for new immigrants:
- Fill out your profile completely (including a headshot, past work experience, and skill tags)
- "Translate" your past work experience in Taiwan into descriptions North Americans will understand
- Actively connect with people you know, alumni and peers
- Turn on the "Open to Work" feature (you can set it so only recruiters can see it)
3. WorkBC.ca (BC only)
The official employment service platform of the BC provincial government. In addition to job searches, it also offers:
- Free resume review service
- Job training subsidies
- One-on-one consultation with an Employment Counsellor
- Employment support programs designed specifically for newcomers
4. Job Bank (jobbank.gc.ca)
This is the federal government's official job platform. Employers must first register on Job Bank before they can apply for an LMIA to hire foreign workers. This means there are plenty of legitimate positions where employers are willing to hire new immigrants.
5. Glassdoor
While job hunting, you can check out company culture reviews, salary ranges, and interview questions. Understand the inside of a company before you apply so you don't step into a trap.
Keys to writing a Canadian resume
A Canadian resume differs greatly from a Taiwanese one, and using the Taiwanese format will get your resume tossed out right away:
Canadian Resume DOs
- Plain text / clean format, 1–2 pages (no more than 2 pages)
- Quantify your achievements with numbers: "increased sales by 35%," "managed a team of 10"
- No photo (Canadian law protects job seekers from discrimination based on appearance)
- Don't include your age, marital status, or ID number
- Tailor the keywords for each job to match its job description (JD)
Canadian Resume DON’Ts
- Don't use fancy layout designs (Applicant Tracking Systems may not be able to read them).
- Don't write Taiwanese-style closings like "I humbly beg you to grant me the opportunity"
- Don't translate your job title into terms that are common in Taiwan but unfamiliar in North America
- Don't just list all your job duties as bullet points—emphasizeAchievements
The importance of the Cover Letter
Many positions in Canada require a cover letter. Quite a few immigrants from Taiwan skip it entirely, which is a big mistake. A cover letter is your chance to showcase your written English, explain why you're a fit for the role, and show your knowledge of the company.
Basic structure: open by expressing your interest → 2–3 specific achievements that match the role → close by saying you look forward to hearing from them. Keep it to 350–400 words.
Differences in the Interview Process
A phone / video interview is the first hurdle
For most positions in Canada, the first round is a phone or Zoom interview (30–45 minutes) where HR screens you. Only after passing that do you get a technical interview or a meeting with the manager.
Behavioural Interview
Canadian interviews make heavy use of STAR-format questions: "Can you give an example of a time you handled a difficult customer?" Prepare 5–8 stories from your past jobs and answer using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) format.
Salary negotiation
The Canadian WorkplaceThey'll expect you to negotiate salary. Accepting the first offer figure outright is seen in Canada as a lack of self-assessment. Check the market rate on Glassdoor, LinkedIn Salary, and Levels.fyi, then put forward a number 10–15% above your expectation to leave room for negotiation.
Common job-hunting pitfalls for new immigrants
Pitfall 1: Only applying to online job postings
Pitfall 2: Not getting your Taiwanese degree and credentials assessed for equivalency
Many professions (nursing, engineering, accounting, teaching) requireCanadian license or certification. A nursing license from Taiwan is not valid in Canada; you need to pass the NCLEX-RN exam. CPAs (Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada) must also pass Canada's own exams.
Before you start job hunting, confirm whether your profession requires Canadian certification:NOC occupation code lookup
Pitfall 3: Not preparing enough for the English interview
Even if your English is very good, nerves combined with a Canadian accent during an interview can throw off your responses. We strongly recommend practising with friends beforehand, recording your own answers, or finding a language exchange partner through programs like Praxis Language.

- Overpaying you, then asking you to refund the difference——they send you a check or e-transfer for too large an amount and ask you to wire back the difference; a few days later the original check bounces, and you’re left covering the money out of your own pocket.
- Guaranteed hire without an interview, or insist on chatting only through messaging apps and refuse to video call or meet in person.
- Asking you to provide your bank login, your full SIN number, or to transfer money into your personal account and then send it out again——this is often a way to launder money for scam rings, and it could land you in legal trouble.
- Borrowing the name of a real Canadian company, looking to recruit you for side gigs like "boosting volume," "order brushing," or "earning money by liking posts."
FAQ
Q: My Work Permit is about to expire, will an employer be willing to hire me?
If your work permit has less than 6 months left, some employers may worry that you'll leave (or be unable to stay on) after they invest in training you. We recommend proactively explaining your visa status and renewal plans when job hunting, and attaching your IRCC confirmation letter (if you have one).
Q: Can Study Permit students work in Canada?
Yes, but with limits: during regular terms you can work up to 20 hours per week, and during breaks you can work full-time. After graduating you can apply for a PGWP (Post-Graduation Work Permit) to work full-time.
Q: How good does my English need to be to work in Canada?
It depends on the position and industry. IT technical roles may have relatively low English requirements; customer service, sales and management roles require fluent English. Most new immigrants say their English improves quickly once they start working, so don't give up on submitting your resume just because of the English barrier.
