Planning Vancouver: Choosing a One-, Three- or Five-Day Itinerary

Content reviewed: 2026-09-12

Count the days you can actually use before choosing a Vancouver itinerary. Three nights do not necessarily mean three full days: arrival, immigration, luggage, airport travel and check-in take time. Put fixed transport commitments in the calendar first, then allocate downtown, North Shore and excursion days.

1 dayDowntown and the waterfront, with limited transfersSkip the North Shore and longer excursions; use one section for half a day.
3 daysCity, a North Shore day, then markets or neighbourhoodsChoose one North Shore priority and leave weather flexibility.
5 daysCity and North Shore, plus Victoria or WhistlerBoth destinations mean two long excursion days; choose one for a slower pace.

For one day, focus on Canada Place, Coal Harbour and a city-side section of Stanley Park, with Granville Island if time allows. Do not turn every alternative into a compulsory stop. The one-day plan offers an eight-hour example. On a layover, subtract airport travel and check-in first and choose a short section from the remaining time.

With three days, give the first to downtown, the second to the North Shore and the third to Granville Island, Kitsilano or Main Street. The three-day plan explains choices among Capilano, Lynn Canyon and Grouse. Richmond or UBC can replace an existing slot after checking the complete return journey, rather than adding to a full day.

Five days allow a longer excursion while preserving rest elsewhere. To see both Victoria and Whistler, the five-day plan allocates separate long days; it is not a slow-paced version. Walking ability, early starts and rest needs matter more than the number of sights. Leaving an afternoon free is a valid choice.

Choose how you will pay for city and North Shore transport. TransLink’s transfer rules say a cash bus fare does not transfer to SkyTrain or SeaBus. Check the ticket and transfer conditions for your route before comparing single fares, day passes or other payment methods; do not assume one is always cheapest.

For Victoria, choose a vehicle or walk-on journey and schedule access at both terminals. BC Ferries requires booked foot passengers at Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay to obtain a boarding pass before entering the waiting area. Booking confirmation does not complete on-site check-in. Check the return and missed-sailing arrangements rather than treating transit and the ferry as a single ticket.

Whistler also needs its own transport plan. Whistler Blackcomb’s access guide describes driving, shuttles and local transport. Drivers should check roads, parking, equipment and rental terms; shuttle users should check stops, baggage, both directions and cancellation. Compare the effort and your group’s needs as well as a car’s daily rate and a bus ticket.

Compare accommodation by actual address and travel pattern. Downtown, Waterfront, Yaletown, Richmond or a SkyTrain location are search areas, not quality or low-price guarantees. Include room cost, applicable taxes, cancellation, luggage storage, evening return and daily travel. Changing hotels also takes checkout, luggage-transfer and check-in time.

Add paid activities only when you want them and have checked opening and conditions. In rain, exchange city, North Shore and indoor slots without buying unnecessary backup tickets.
