In their final Group A match at the 2026 World Cup, South Africa edged South Korea 1-0 at Estadio BBVA (Monterrey Stadium) in Guadalupe, Mexico. The deadlock was broken in the 63rd minute when Thapelo Maseko met a cross from Tshepang Moremi to fire home the only goal for Bafana Bafana. South Korea dominated the ball, holding more than 65 percent of possession, but could not turn that superiority into a goal. Coach Hong Myung-bo left captain Son Heung-min on the bench, only introducing him at half-time, while Kim Min-jae saw a header cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba. There were no red cards, VAR reversals or penalties in the match, and South Africa held on for the win.
The result carries real weight: South Africa finished second in Group A on four points and reached the World Cup knockout stage (round of 32) for the first time in their history, while Mexico topped the group with a perfect nine points from three wins. South Korea, on three points, were eliminated in third place. South Africa now face Canada, the Group B runners-up, on 28 June in the Los Angeles area for a place in the round of 16.
