In front of more than 66,000 fans at Seattle Stadium, Egypt and Iran shook hands on a 1-1 draw to close out Group G. Egypt struck early, needing just five minutes to break through as Mo Salah stirred up trouble inside the box and Mahmoud Saber pounced on the loose ball to put the Pharaohs ahead. Iran hit back almost immediately, veteran Ramin Rezaeian levelling in the 14th minute with a finish into the far corner from a desperately tight angle. Iran then had a golden chance to lead when captain Mehdi Taremi stepped up to a penalty, but goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir produced a fine save to keep the scores level.
Iran poured forward after the break, Taremi rattling the woodwork with an 89th-minute header before Shoja Khalilzadeh appeared to have won it deep in stoppage time, only for VAR to rule the strike out for offside and leave the final score at 1-1. The point sent Egypt through as Group G runners-up, reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history, and they now face Australia in Dallas. Iran finished third and must wait on results elsewhere to learn whether they progress as one of the best third-placed sides.
