In their 2026 World Cup Group I clash at Toronto Stadium, Senegal thrashed Iraq 5-0, becoming the first African team in history to score five goals in a single World Cup match. Habib Diarra put the Lions of Teranga ahead as early as the 4th minute, and the game turned decisively in the 13th when Iraq defender Rebin Sulaka brought down Sadio Mané to deny an obvious goalscoring chance; his initial yellow card was upgraded to red after a VAR review, leaving Iraq to play the rest of the match with ten men. Senegal took complete control after the break, with Ismaïla Sarr scoring in the 56th minute, Pape Gueye netting twice in the 59th and 71st, and Iliman Ndiaye rounding off the rout in the 82nd.
The result left Group I topped by France on nine points, with Norway second on six, both progressing to the knockouts. Senegal finished third on three points, but their superior goal difference from this win was enough to sneak them through as one of the best third-placed teams into the Round of 32. Senegal’s reward is a last-32 tie against Group G winners Belgium, to be played on 1 July in Seattle.
