Germany came from behind to edge Ivory Coast 2-1 in Group E of the 2026 World Cup at Toronto Stadium, denting the debutants who had started the tournament so brightly. Ivory Coast defended with discipline and struck first through captain Franck Kessié, who converted a clinical counterattack in the 30th minute to lead 1-0 at the break. Germany dominated possession but were repeatedly frustrated: Aleksandar Pavlović had a goal chalked off by VAR in the 22nd minute for a foul on the goalkeeper, and Kai Havertz saw a 39th-minute finish ruled out for a foul by Jamal Musiala.
Manager Julian Nagelsmann rolled the dice with a triple change on the hour, and substitute Deniz Undav proved the match-winner. He levelled in the 68th minute with a volley from Nadiem Amiri’s cross, then completed his brace deep into stoppage time, latching onto a Felix Nmecha pass to turn inside the box and fire home in the 90+4th minute. The victory sent Germany through to the round of 32 with a game to spare; although Germany and Ivory Coast both finished on six points, Germany topped the group by virtue of this head-to-head result.
