Norway edged Senegal 3-2 in a five-goal thriller in their second Group I match at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on 22 June. Substitute Marcus Holmgren Pedersen opened the scoring with a close-range finish in the 43rd minute, and Erling Haaland calmly slotted home early in the second half in the 48th minute. Senegal hit back quickly when Ismaïla Sarr curled a superb effort into the top corner in the 53rd minute, only for Haaland to restore the two-goal cushion with his second of the night in the 58th. Sarr struck again deep in stoppage time in the 90+3rd minute to make it 3-2, but Norway held on. There were no red cards, penalties or VAR reversals.
Haaland’s brace took his World Cup tally to four goals, making him only the second player in the past 50 years to score twice in each of his first two World Cup games. The win booked Norway’s place in the Round of 32. France top Group I on six points from two wins, with Norway second on three; Senegal and Iraq are both without a point. Norway close the group stage against France on 26 June in a battle for top spot, while Senegal face Iraq the same day and must win to keep their slim qualification hopes alive.
