In front of roughly 80,000 home supporters at Mexico City Stadium, hosts Mexico rounded off their Group A campaign in style with a comprehensive 3-0 win over the Czech Republic. The first half remained goalless, but Mexico burst into life after the break: Mateo Chavez opened the scoring in the 55th minute, Julian Quinones doubled the lead in the 61st, and Alvaro Fidalgo added a late third deep in stoppage time in the 90+4th minute to seal the result. The night also delivered history, as 17-year-old Gilberto Mora (17 years and 253 days) became the youngest player to start a World Cup match since Nigeria’s Femi Opabunmi in 2002, while 40-year-old goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa came on in the 78th minute to make his sixth World Cup appearance. There were no red cards, penalties or VAR reversals.
The victory left Mexico top of Group A with a flawless record of three wins from three, six goals scored, none conceded and nine points, the only host nation to sweep their group. The Czech Republic finished bottom on a single point and were eliminated, with South Africa progressing as runners-up. Mexico now turn to the Round of 32 on 1 July at Mexico City Stadium, where they face Ecuador, the third-placed side from Group E, as they look to carry their winning momentum into the knockout rounds at home.
