France cruised past Iraq 3-0 in their 2026 World Cup Group I fixture at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a fizzing left-footed drive from outside the box, then doubled his tally in the 54th minute, pouncing on a botched Iraqi short goal-kick and tapping in after a selfless square from Ousmane Dembélé to draw level on his own World Cup career goals mark. Dembélé made it three in the 66th minute, worked through by Michael Olise before firing into the bottom-left corner. The night’s most dramatic twist came at half-time, when heavy rain and thunderstorms forced a stoppage of more than two hours, the first weather delay of the tournament.
The win sent France to the top of Group I with a perfect nine points from three victories and into the knockout stage, while Iraq finished bottom on zero points and were eliminated. France then beat Sweden 3-0 in the Round of 32 on June 30 to reach the last 16, and will return to Philadelphia on July 4 to face Paraguay, who knocked out Germany on penalties, for a place in the quarter-finals.
