In the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 knockout stage, Egypt and Australia played to a 1-1 draw through 90 minutes at Dallas Stadium, with extra time failing to separate the two sides. Egypt then won the penalty shootout 4-2 to eliminate Australia and advance to the Round of 16. In regulation time, Australia took the lead through an own goal from Hany (55th minute), before Egypt equalized through Ashour in the 13th minute. Egypt converted all four of their spot kicks in the shootout (Mohamed Salah calmly chipped in a Panenka), while Australia’s Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington both missed theirs. It’s the first time in Egypt’s World Cup history that they’ve won a penalty shootout, while it’s Australia’s first-ever World Cup shootout defeat.
