The only goal of the game came in the 42nd minute of the first half, when Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, under Marcelo Bielsa, made a costly error and let a seemingly harmless Álex Baena effort slip into his own net; the goal was credited to Baena. The 40-year-old Muslera asked to be substituted at half-time. Uruguay’s night grew worse in stoppage time, as Agustín Canobbio was shown a straight red card in the 90+5th minute for a wild lunge on Pau Cubarsí, leaving Bielsa’s side to play out the closing moments a man down.
The defeat sent two-time world champions Uruguay crashing out at the group stage, making them one of the highest-ranked sides to exit in the first round. Spain finished top of Group H on seven points, while tournament debutants Cape Verde advanced as runners-up.
