Colombia opened their 2026 World Cup Group K campaign with a 3-1 win over debutants Uzbekistan at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Right-back Daniel Muñoz gave Colombia a deserved lead in the 40th minute, finishing off a slick team move, before Abbosbek Fayzullaev pulled Uzbekistan level with a close-range tap-in on the hour mark to spark hope among the tournament newcomers. The lead lasted just five minutes: Luis Díaz restored Colombia’s advantage in the 65th minute when his shot was mishandled by the Uzbek goalkeeper and crept in, and substitute Jaminton Campaz sealed the result with a header deep in stoppage time (90+9). There were no red cards, penalties or own goals, and Colombia’s superiority showed in the shot count, 15 attempts to Uzbekistan’s nine.
The victory sends Colombia top of Group K on three points with a plus-two goal difference, while Portugal and DR Congo have yet to play and Uzbekistan sit bottom on zero, their qualification hopes already looking difficult. Colombia next travel to the Estadio Akron in Zapopan to face DR Congo on 23 June, chasing an early spot in the knockout rounds, while Uzbekistan take on Portugal the same day at NRG Stadium in Houston in search of a first-ever World Cup point.
