In their 2026 World Cup Group J clash at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara, Algeria came from behind to beat World Cup debutants Jordan 1-2. Jordan struck first in the 36th minute when Nizar Al-Rashdan headed home to give the newcomers a dream lead. After the break, however, Algeria turned the tie around from set pieces: Nadhir Benbouali levelled with a header in the 69th minute, and Amine Gouiri poked in the winner in the 82nd from another corner, with Riyad Mahrez influential in the build-up. There were no red cards, penalties or major VAR reversals, as Algeria completed the comeback on the back of two corner-kick goals.

The result left Group J finishing with Argentina top on nine points, and Austria and Algeria level on four in second and third, while Jordan lost all three games, finished bottom on zero points and bowed out on their World Cup debut. Algeria advanced to the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams and will next face Group B winners Switzerland at BC Place in Vancouver on Thursday, 2 July.
