In their Group J finale at Dallas Stadium, Argentina beat World Cup debutants Jordan 3-1. The holders took charge early, with Lo Celso opening the scoring from a direct free kick in the 19th minute. In the 31st minute Argentina were awarded a penalty after Senesi was fouled in the box, and Lautaro Martínez converted from the spot to make it 2-0. Jordan pulled one back through Mousa Al-Taamari in the 55th minute, before Lionel Messi, on as a substitute, sealed the win with a low free kick in the 80th minute.
That goal saw the 39-year-old Messi score in a seventh consecutive World Cup match, setting a new all-time record for scoring in successive tournament games and moving clear of the greats he had previously been level with. The result left Argentina top of Group J with a perfect nine points from three wins as they advanced, while Jordan finished bottom on zero points from three defeats and were eliminated.
