Egypt staged a second-half comeback at BC Place in Vancouver to beat New Zealand 3-1 and claim the first FIFA World Cup victory in their history. It was New Zealand who struck first, Finn Surman heading home from a set piece in the 15th minute to send the All Whites into the interval in front. Egypt roared back after the break: Mostafa Zico levelled with a header in the 58th minute, Mohamed Salah collected a team-mate’s pass to score his first goal of the tournament in the 67th, and Trézéguet sealed the win with a diving header in the 82nd. There were no red cards and no penalties in the match.
The result was Egypt’s first-ever win at a World Cup finals since their debut appearance back in 1934, a genuinely historic milestone that lifted them up the Group G table. Egypt next face Iran on 26 June in Seattle as they push for a place in the knockout rounds.
