Mexican fans took home more than just their team’s victory at this World Cup — one family got back a dog they’d been searching for nearly a month.
Here’s how it happened: in Ciudad Victoria, in the central Mexican state of Tamaulipas, a 6-year-old female dog named La Gorda wandered off from near her home one day. Her family searched for almost a month with no news. Her owner, Ale García, had nearly given up.
The turning point came the day Mexico beat Czechia 3-0. Fans flooded the streets to celebrate, and someone started a Facebook livestream. García’s brother, glued to the screen, suddenly noticed a dog being lifted high into the air by fans, partying along with everyone — wasn’t that the missing La Gorda? He immediately alerted his sister, the family rushed to the scene, and they really did get their dog back.
The sweetest part was what came next. After García shared the reunion online, strangers began sending photos and videos showing everywhere La Gorda had been during her month away. It turned out that along the way, plenty of people who assumed she was a stray had quietly fed her and given her water, making sure she never went hungry.
A trip to the vet showed La Gorda was in good health, aside from needing food and rest. That day, Mexico’s 3-0 win went down in the team’s history — but for this family, the real championship was getting their dog back.
