The final Group J match of the 2026 World Cup produced a breathless finish at Kansas City Stadium (Arrowhead Stadium) in Kansas City, USA, as Algeria and Austria shared the spoils in a 3-3 thriller. Marko Arnautovic opened the scoring for Austria in the 28th minute before Rafik Belghali levelled for Algeria in first-half stoppage time at 45′. Marcel Sabitzer restored Austria’s lead in the 55th minute, but captain Riyad Mahrez equalised in the 60th and struck again at 90+3′, seemingly turning the tie Algeria’s way. Sasa Kalajdzic had the final word, however, heading home in the 90+6th minute to salvage Austria’s qualification. There were no red cards, penalties or VAR reversals, with Arnautovic picking up a yellow card.
The win-win draw sent both sides through: Argentina topped the group on nine points after winning all three matches, while Austria and Algeria finished level on four points. Austria advanced as group runners-up and Algeria squeezed into the last 32 as one of the best third-placed teams, with Jordan bottom and eliminated after three straight defeats and no points. It marked Austria’s first progression beyond the group stage since 1982. In the Round of 32, Austria will meet Spain in Los Angeles, while Algeria head to Vancouver to face Switzerland, giving fans two ties worth watching.
