Fact-check updated: October 13, 2026. Visitor services, bus schedules and seasonal activities change; check the operator’s current notice before you go.
St. John’s sits at the eastern end of Newfoundland. Check the time before booking connections: local clocks are 30 minutes ahead of Atlantic Time and 90 minutes ahead of Eastern Time, including Toronto. Much of downtown can be explored on foot, but its north–south streets are steep and accessibility is limited in some heritage buildings. If anyone in your group uses a wheelchair or has difficulty with hills, confirm entrances, surfaces and transport with each venue. Destination St. John’s lists the airport as about a 10-minute drive from downtown; allow for traffic and your exact destination. See the tourism organization’s transport and accessibility information.
Metrobus is one option in the city. Route 14 serves the airport and parts of St. John’s, but schedules change by season; the page checked here notes that fall/winter schedules are in effect. Confirm the direction, stops and operating hours in the official Metrobus schedule for your travel date rather than relying on a summer timetable.
Signal Hill’s North Head Trail is not an easy, level walk. Parks Canada rates it difficult: about 1.7 km each way and roughly an hour, with narrow sections beside steep drops and nearly 100 m of elevation gain. Consider wind, weather and your own fitness, or choose an accessible area of the grounds instead. Signal Hill is also associated with Marconi’s 1901 reception of a transatlantic wireless signal; see Parks Canada’s history page.
Jellybean Row is a residential area of colourful row houses, so keep doorways and driveways clear when taking photos. Cape Spear’s grounds are open year-round, while visitor services are seasonal. Parks Canada listed daily visitor services from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for June 1–October 9, 2026. That season has ended; do not use those dates as next season’s hours. Check Cape Spear’s current official hours before planning a visit. For drives beyond the city, compare distances with the provincial Community-to-Community Distance Finder and leave time for the route; Newfoundland is too large to treat every stop as a quick day trip.
For two or three days, consider separating downtown from Signal Hill, then decide whether Cape Spear or a longer coastal drive fits your transport and the forecast. This is a planning approach, not a fixed itinerary or a promise that every stop will fit. Use our Canada attractions index and Canada map to check regional locations.
