Montréal trip planning: Old Montréal, Mount Royal, food and places to stay

For a first visit, divide Montréal into three manageable days: Old Montréal and the waterfront; Mount Royal, the Plateau and Mile End; and downtown indoor attractions. Grouping nearby stops leaves more time for a meal instead of crossing town repeatedly. Two nights do not necessarily give you three full days: subtract arrival and departure time, then choose two areas to explore properly rather than squeezing food, viewpoints and museums into one afternoon.

Coming from Toronto, VIA Rail’s Toronto–Montréal route page currently gives an average journey of about 5 hours 13 minutes, with individual trains taking different amounts of time. Compare flying and rail from door to door, including airport or station access, check-in, luggage and the onward transfer. Fares depend on the date, class and change conditions; there is no reliable fixed price gap for everyone. Allow separate travel time if continuing to Québec City.

From YUL, STM’s 747 airport service has a downtown route, 747-1, and a Lionel-Groulx métro route, 747-2. The regular CAD 11.25 airport fare includes 24 consecutive hours on Zone A buses, métro, exo trains and REM. On-board cash payment requires exact coins, not bills. A ticket bought at a parking pay station is a separate one-way product, not a 24-hour pass. Since January 26, 2026, the downtown terminus has been stop 52905 at René-Lévesque and Berri; check current diversions and your direction before travelling.

Check the year before booking around a festival. The 2026 jazz festival ran June 25–July 4, and Just For Laughs ran July 15–26 that year; both are over. Those dates are not a substitute for the following year’s programme. Autumn can accommodate park walks, while winter calls for more indoor options and travel buffers. Avoiding summer does not guarantee a cheaper hotel: compare the total for your actual dates and the cancellation terms.

An Old Montréal day can start at Notre-Dame Basilica, then continue through Place Jacques-Cartier to the Old Port. The official rates distinguish daytime admission from AURA: adult daytime tickets start at CAD 16 including GST and QST, while adult AURA tickets start at CAD 37 before tax. A daytime ticket is not admission to the evening show. Regular daytime hours are Monday–Saturday 9 a.m.–4 p.m. and Sunday 12:30–4 p.m., subject to religious use and events. Tickets cannot be refunded or exchanged, so choose the time carefully.

Give Mount Royal a proper outdoor slot. The city’s park page lists trails, viewpoints including Kondiaronk, and facilities around Beaver Lake; regular park hours are 6 a.m. to midnight. The climb depends on your starting point, route and fitness, rather than a universal 30-minute ascent. Seasonal summer rentals include rowboats, while winter activities include a refrigerated skating rink, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. A frozen-looking lake is not an invitation to walk onto it. Follow the hill with neighbourhood exploring instead of treating it as a quick stop between restaurants.

Explore the Plateau and Mile End on foot: Mont-Royal Avenue shops, Duluth Avenue, outdoor residential staircases and small works of art in green lanes offer different reasons to slow down. Seasonal pedestrian streets have specific dates and boundaries; they are not necessarily car-free all year. Photograph homes from public space and stay off private stairs. One stretch of street, a café and a meal can make a more enjoyable visit than a long checklist of shops.

Bagel opening hours belong to individual branches. The St-Viateur flagship bakery at 263 rue St-Viateur Ouest currently lists 6 a.m.–midnight daily and is mainly a takeaway stop. Its 1127 avenue du Mont-Royal Est branch has seating, but bakery and sandwich-café service finish at different times. Fairmount Bagel is at 74 Fairmount Ouest. For a fair taste comparison, buy the same flavour at each; a plain bagel, one with a spread and a filled sandwich are different purchases.

Compare meal portions before comparing prices. La Banquise’s current menu lists classic poutine at CAD 9.99 regular or CAD 17.25 large, before tax; toppings, drinks and other varieties cost extra. Plant-based cheese and sauce options appear on the menu, but the restaurant warns of possible cross-contact. Tell staff about allergies or dietary restrictions. Schwartz’s, established in 1928, specialises in smoked meat. Make it a meal in its own right rather than adding another heavy dish just to fit in a famous name.

For a booked dinner, Joe Beef currently lists Tuesday–Saturday 5–10:30 p.m. Online reservations accommodate up to six people; larger groups must contact the restaurant. An old per-person estimate without drinks is not a dependable budget. Duluth has bring-your-own-wine restaurants, including La Prunelle, but BYOB is a restaurant policy, not a rule for the entire street. Check the menu, permitted drinks and any associated charges before comparing the full meal cost.

These food options suit different kinds of meals. Only specific, checked menu items have a numerical price below. A takeaway snack and a full table-service dinner should not be treated as equivalent dining budgets.

RÉSO is useful for a wet or cold downtown day. The city describes roughly 32 kilometres of underground pedestrian connections linking commercial premises, transport, hotels and cultural venues. That does not make the whole city accessible underground. Use the map linked by the city and identify the entrance you need, connecting indoor passages with outdoor walking where necessary. Shops, performance venues and transport facilities have their own schedules, so bring clothing suitable for going outside.

Choose a neighbourhood that fits your daily plans, then compare identical dates, room types and occupancy. These four places differ in location and services; use a quote for your selected dates. Hôtel Nelligan in Old Montréal is presenting its redesigned rooms and next chapter, with a new spa planned for early 2027; do not assume future facilities will be available for your stay. Le Germain Montréal is downtown, useful if shopping and cultural venues feature in your plans; valet parking costs extra.

On the Plateau, Auberge de La Fontaine faces La Fontaine Park, charges extra for breakfast and has no elevator. Discuss the actual room and access route before booking if you have mobility requirements. The hostel previously listed as HI Montreal should now be checked under Saintlo Montréal, at 1030 Mackay Street. It offers both shared and private rooms and lists free breakfast and a shared kitchen. A dorm bed price is not the total for a private room.

If you do not speak French, start with “Bonjour” and ask whether English is possible. Confirm service languages when booking accommodation, a restaurant or a tour instead of assuming every staff member is bilingual. Save addresses in their original French spelling along with confirmations and stop names. This also helps you check that different language interfaces refer to the same business and entrance.

With three full days, a practical order is Old Montréal, the basilica and waterfront first; Mount Royal, the Plateau and Mile End second; then RÉSO and cultural venues that interest you, depending on the weather. This is an itinerary suggestion, to be adjusted around actual reservations. A Québec City day tour needs a full day of its own. Avoid an inflexible evening booking after its return, and do not base an arrival-day show reservation on the most optimistic transfer time.
