Updated July 28, 2026 at 7:30 a.m. Pacific. Live eligibility and service availability must be confirmed on IRCC’s official page. IRCC has scheduled an announcement in Vancouver about online passport renewals for 10:00 a.m. today. This article does not guess what has not yet been announced; it explains the eligibility, photo, processing-time and fee rules already published online.
Online renewal may save a trip to Service Canada, but the important question is not whether you can open the portal. Your current passport is cancelled after you submit online. For anyone who might travel soon, that timing risk matters more than avoiding a queue.

The current service is for eligible adults renewing their own passport, with both home and mailing addresses in Canada. The existing document must be a regular blue passport, issued after the applicant was 16, valid for five or ten years, show a place of birth, and have been issued within the past 15 years. It must already be expired or expire within six months; a passport with more than six months left is not currently eligible for online renewal.
| Check before applying | Current online condition | If it does not fit |
|---|---|---|
| Applicant and address | Apply for yourself; home and mailing addresses are in Canada. | Use the official route for applicants abroad or other situations. |
| Existing passport | Regular blue adult passport, five or ten years, issued within 15 years, with place of birth. | First applications, child, special and diplomatic passports use different processes. |
| Expiry | Expired now or expiring within the next six months. | More than six months remaining is not accepted online at present. |
| Personal details | Same name, birth date, birthplace and gender identifier; no observation in the passport. | Changes or special observations require another application route. |
| Travel timing | No need for the passport for 20 business days plus mailing time. | Apply in person if travelling soon; urgent and express service is in person only. |
| Document status | Not seized or surrendered, and not a recovered passport previously reported lost or stolen. | Follow the lost, stolen or special-case instructions first. |
The timing point is easy to miss. IRCC lists a 20-business-day service standard for online, mail and regular Service Canada submissions, and that figure does not include mailing. Once an online application is submitted, the current passport is no longer valid. If flights are booked, work travel can arise unexpectedly, or the passport is needed for another transaction, applying in person may preserve more options.
A phone selfie is not enough. The digital photo must be taken in person by a commercial photographer within six months, cannot be a scan of a print, and cannot be altered with filters, editing software or AI. The official file rules call for JPEG or JPG, portrait 3:2, between 1,800×1,200 and 4,500×3,000 pixels, and 200 KB to 5 MB. The upload also requires the photographer or studio name, address and date. Asking for both the digital file and printed photos makes it easier to switch to mail or in-person service if the eligibility screen says no.
There is no online discount. Since March 31, 2026, an adult passport issued in Canada costs C$122.50 for five years or C$163.50 for ten years, subject to the amount shown when applying. IRCC’s modernization record says online adult renewals began rolling out in late 2024 and more than 91,000 Canadians had used the channel by January 31, 2026. That confirms a functioning service, but it does not mean every adult qualifies today.

The IRCC media advisory confirms today’s announcement time; the online renewal page supplies the live eligibility and cancellation warning; the photo page provides file requirements; the service-standard page separates processing from mailing; the fee page gives current amounts; and the modernization record explains the rollout.
