Booking your next cruise onboard may secure a smaller deposit, conditional onboard credit or time to choose a sailing later. It does not guarantee the lowest total fare. Distinguish a confirmed ship-and-date booking from an open Future Cruise Deposit and from Future Cruise Credit issued for reasons such as cancellation. Similar names can conceal different payment, refund and expiry conditions.
How the four programs differ
Princess’s FCD guide publishes a $100 deposit per person and up to $150 onboard credit per person. Book within a year of purchase or the unused deposit returns to the original payment method. Credit depends on cruise length and cabin and applies only to eligible first and second guests using an FCD; world voyages and cruises of 45 days or more have separate arrangements. This does not make every cancellation refundable after booking: an applied FCD remains subject to cancellation terms and cannot be added after full payment. The page labels these figures only with $, so this guide does not infer the billing currency for an individual market.
Royal Caribbean’s NextCruise FAQ separates two deadlines. Book Later lists a $200 deposit per stateroom; select the ship and date within two months of reservation creation for up to $300 instant savings. The deposit can keep Book Later active for up to one year, but that does not preserve the savings for the entire year. The two-month change-fee waiver uses the same initial window; standard change rules apply afterwards. Verify currency on the actual quote.
Holland America’s onboard-booking page describes up to US$400 per person in shipboard credit and a reduced deposit, with completion through a preferred travel advisor; charter voyages are excluded. The maximum is not an automatic award. Double-credit offers, eligibility to reuse a cancelled deposit and deadlines depend on the plan. A smaller deposit reduces upfront payment, not the fare due at final payment.
Celebrity’s publicly accessible Future Cruise document is explicitly dated 2020. It lists CruiseNow deposits from US$100 per person in Sky Suite or below and US$50–500 credit per eligible cabin on cruises of four nights or more. Cruise Later requires selecting within three months for credit and within one year for a sailing. It also describes a possible US$100-per-person ship/date change fee for non-refundable deposits. These are examples from dated published terms, not a guarantee of your new onboard offer in 2026; obtain the version applicable to your country of residence before signing.
Use the table as an index to different programs. Per-person and per-cabin benefits are not interchangeable, and onboard credit, instant savings and a deposit are not the same kind of money. The Princess and Royal Caribbean rows retain the source’s $ symbol; the cited Holland America and Celebrity documents specify US dollars. Verify other-market amounts in writing.
| Cruise line | Program | Deposit | Credit or savings | Deadline | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Princess | FCD | $100 per person; verify currency | Up to $150 per person, by length and cabin | Book within one year; unused deposit refunded | Eligible first two guests; world and 45+ day exceptions |
| Royal Caribbean | NextCruise Book Later | $200 per cabin; verify currency | Up to $300 instant savings | Select within two months for savings; deposit up to one year | No guaranteed savings or change-fee waiver after two months |
| Holland America | Onboard future booking | Reduced deposit, plan dependent | Up to US$400 per person credit | Actual plan and cancellation terms | Eligibility conditions; charters excluded |
| Celebrity (2020 document) | CruiseNow / Cruise Later | Document lists from US$100 per person, Sky Suite or below | US$50–500 per eligible cabin, four nights or more | Later: three months for credit; one year to select | Not a guaranteed 2026 offer; obtain applicable current-market version |
Decide using total cost and restrictions
For example, if an otherwise equivalent quote costs USD 400 less while an onboard offer adds only USD 100 credit, even using all of that credit does not offset the price gap. This is illustrative arithmetic, not a live fare. Credit may be worth less to you if you would not otherwise make the purchases; the cited Celebrity terms explicitly prohibit redeeming it for cash.
| Situation | Booking onboard may suit you | Comparing at home may suit you |
|---|---|---|
| You know the next route and dates | You can secure a cabin and reduced deposit | You can wait for another promotion, but may lose your preferred cabin |
| You mainly want flexibility | Book Later or an FCD can lock in a reduced deposit | If you may not sail within a year, there may be no reason to commit |
| Onboard credit matters | The onboard offer may include OBC | If the fare later drops, the OBC may not offset the difference |
| You need a refundable deposit | Confirm the exact terms before signing | At home, you can compare refundable and non-refundable rates carefully |
| You want travel-advisor support | HAL and Celebrity terms discuss retaining or assigning an advisor | If you want competing quotes from a new advisor, confirm transfer rules first |
| A later promotion may be better | An onboard offer does not guarantee the lowest fare | At home, you can compare several channels and cruise lines |
A later price drop does not automatically generate a refund. Ask whether repricing uses the then-current fare, removes original benefits, increases the deposit or becomes cancellation and rebooking after final payment. If you need an advisor, settle attribution or transfer procedures onboard. HAL and Celebrity describe different arrangements; neither can be generalized to every cruise line.
Get written answers to the following questions with your quote. A booking deadline differs from a sailing deadline, and a refundable deposit differs from automatic refund of an unused deposit or a change fee. A verbal promise of flexibility does not resolve those details.
- Is the deposit refundable or non-refundable?
- If I change the ship, date, or cabin category, will I keep the OBC?
- If the public fare drops later, can the booking be repriced?
- Can a travel advisor take over the booking, and by what deadline?
- Can this offer combine with a later promotion? If not, can I switch offers?
- Does the deadline apply to making the booking or completing the sailing?
- Is the OBC per person, per stateroom, or limited to the first two guests?
| Question | Reasons to sign | Reasons not to sign |
|---|---|---|
| Will you definitely cruise again within a year? | You already have a destination and approximate month in mind | You are reacting mainly to the atmosphere onboard |
| Do you understand the deposit rules? | The written terms clearly say refundable or automatically returned | You have only received a verbal explanation |
| Will you use the OBC? | You would buy shore excursions, Wi-Fi, or specialty dining anyway | You plan to spend very little onboard |
| Have you compared the price? | You at least know the cruise line’s current benchmark fare | You have not checked possible public promotions |
| Can your travel advisor take over? | The onboard consultant has confirmed assignment or transfer rules | You need a specific advisor but have not confirmed eligibility |
If the sales discussion stresses “today only” but cannot explain refunds, changes, credit expiry and combinability, keep the quote and compare before signing. Even with firm travel plans, use the full cruise-cost example to include transport, hotels and extras. A low deposit is not a reason to accept non-refundable spending you do not understand.
