Toronto’s orange-yellow sky in mid-July did not mean a wildfire was burning inside the city. Smoke from fires in northwestern Ontario had travelled south. The haze has eased for now, but the useful lesson is to check the AQHI and official alerts instead of judging risk by the colour of the sky.
If you stepped outside Toronto around July 15, the grey-yellow cast was hard to miss. The sun looked orange, distant towers faded into the haze, and people who rarely follow air quality began asking whether a fire was burning nearby. The more accurate answer is that the main fires were in northern and northwestern Ontario, while Toronto was affected by smoke carried into southern Ontario.

NASA Earth Observatory’s July 14 satellite image shows the route clearly. At the time, nearly 850 wildfires were burning across Canada and more than 180 were in Ontario. Smoke from fires in northwestern Ontario was moving mainly east and southeast. Smoke high in the atmosphere may have little effect at ground level; when it mixes down, Toronto’s air quality can deteriorate quickly. That is why a dramatic sky and the health risk at street level do not always move together.
At 6:35 p.m. EDT on July 24, Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Toronto air-quality alert page showed no alerts in effect. The Toronto AQHI page calculated a reading of 3, or low risk, at 8:00 p.m., while the forecast maximum was 4, or moderate risk, from Friday night through Sunday. These are timestamped snapshots, not a guarantee for the weekend. Environment Canada also notes that real-time observations have not completed the same quality-control process as forecast data, so check the live page again before changing outdoor plans.
- AQHI 1–3: low risk; most people can continue outdoor activities as usual.
- AQHI 4–6: moderate risk; people who are more sensitive may want to reduce strenuous activity if symptoms appear.
- AQHI 7–10: high risk; keep outdoor exercise and long activities flexible and follow any air-quality warning.
- AQHI above 10: very high risk; everyone should reduce exposure and pay attention to symptoms.
Toronto Public Health recommends closing windows and doors when outdoor air is poor, using an appropriate HVAC filter or portable air cleaner, and avoiding extra indoor pollution from smoking, candles or frying food. A well-fitted N95-style respirator can reduce exposure to fine particles outdoors, but it does not filter smoke gases or protect your eyes. Heat still matters too; if your home cannot stay cool with cleaner air, the City lists Cleaner Air Spaces.
For visitors, the practical response is flexibility rather than cancelling every outdoor plan. This smoke episode has eased in Toronto, but fires in the north are still active and wind direction can change. Before a run, a park visit, a ferry trip to the Toronto Islands or a drive into northern Ontario, spend half a minute checking the AQHI, the air-quality alert page and any fire information for your destination. Those sources are more reliable than trying to read the sky.
