German fan Sebastian Krause packed more than excitement for his World Cup trip to the United States — he also brought some fear. He admitted that before leaving, he was worried: the news kept talking about crime and shootings in America, and he was almost afraid to come.
The opposite happened. During his days watching matches in Boston, the locals were so warm it caught him off guard. One night after a game, his group had no way back to their hotel, and a local family gave them a ride without asking for anything in return. It was that small act of kindness that melted him.
Interviewed by NBC 10 Boston reporter Oscar Margáin, he broke down halfway through: “I fell in love with this country, it was so emotional, I even cried in the stadium.” He added a heartfelt line: “Americans are not rude, Germans are not rude, and together we can do great things.”
The funniest and most sincere part — Germany went out on penalties to Paraguay, but he said he was more heartbroken about leaving the United States than about his team’s elimination. One tournament turned a once-fearful man into someone in love with a place he’d never known. That may be exactly what makes the World Cup so special.
