One of Vancouver’s largest free cultural street celebrations, Italian Day on The Drive, takes place every June in the “Little Italy” district of Commercial Drive. The 2026 edition is on June 14 (Sunday), running from 12 noon all the way to 8 p.m., with this year’s theme being “Campione (Champion / the champion spirit).” The entire stretch of Commercial Drive, from Venables to Grandview—about 14 blocks—is fully closed to traffic and transformed into an Italian piazza and street, drawing around 300,000 people each year. It’s one of my own favourite days to bring friends along—no tickets, free admission, and the moment you step in you’re surrounded by Italian flair.
Must-Eats and Must-Dos On Site
Food is the star of the day. There are plenty of Pizza by the Slice stalls, from the classic Margherita to pepperoni, with a crust that’s crisp on the outside and soft inside, sliced fresh to order. The one most worth lining up for is the Italian-style rotisserie roast, where a whole pig turns slowly on a large rotisserie until the skin is golden and crispy and the aroma of its fat fills the air, with charcoal grills nearby handling all kinds of meats. When it’s hot, grab a scoop of Italian gelato—the chocolate, strawberry and vanilla are all rich and smooth; I particularly recommend Café Calabria, with the giant ice-cream model at its entrance, which serves authentic gelato as well as freshly made Italian coffee. Here’s a little tip I use every year: on site you can actually get things to eat without spending money. When you see the stall with the longest line, just join it—it’s usually free. Some stalls hand out free pasta, playing games can win you free bottled water, and sponsors also offer free snack samples. The free game stalls are just as fun: the Cornhole bean-bag game sponsored by Vancity lets you win a prize by tossing a bean bag into the hole; the lucky spinning wheel at the Vancity booth can land you snack packs and small gifts; and there’s also the classic Plinko ball-drop game on site, which you can complete to redeem snacks, bottled water and sports drinks. During the event there are plenty of volunteers helping with the flow of foot traffic, and police patrol to keep order, so it’s all very safe—just follow the on-site directions.
A few practical reminders: the sunshine in Vancouver in mid-June is quite strong, so I’d suggest bringing sunscreen, wearing a hat or carrying an umbrella, dressing in light clothing, and rehydrating regularly (you can get water by playing games, so you don’t necessarily have to pay for it). The thing that takes a bit more homework is the toilets—there are limited numbers on site and they’re hard to find, so I strongly recommend taking care of that at home before you set out. As for getting there, parking around Commercial Drive is very scarce, so public transit is most recommended: multiple bus routes serve the area, there are bike parking areas if you cycle, and if you really must drive, set out early. Italian Day falls right during the 2026 World Cup period, which is also the arrangement I find the best: spend the day eating, drinking and playing on Commercial Drive until early evening, then move on to a nearby sports bar in the evening to watch the World Cup—food, culture and sport all satisfied at once.
