Before preparing for an ICBC test in British Columbia, identify your stage: a first L licence, an upgrade after the N stage, or a process involving an out-of-province licence. BC rules are not a uniform Canadian testing system, and holding a Taiwanese licence does not by itself establish whether a road test is required. The booking page tells non-BC licence holders who have passed the knowledge test but have not received a learner licence to call the licensing information line. Confirm eligibility and the earliest test date before planning practice. Until you are legally licensed, our Vancouver SkyTrain and transit guide offers another way to get around; a pass or booking alone is not permission to drive.
The learner knowledge test requires 40 correct answers out of 50 multiple-choice questions. Get your L says you can obtain an L licence from age 16. Learn to Drive Smart covers signs, road rules, observation and decisions, and sharing the road. The old claim that signs always account for 25–30% of questions lacks sufficient original evidence, so do not use it to predict your test. Work through the official guide and practice questions; familiarity with the format does not guarantee a pass.
The online knowledge-test page, checked October 8, 2026, says Class 5/7 passenger-vehicle and Class 6/8 motorcycle knowledge tests became available online June 9. You have up to 72 hours after registration to start and 45 minutes to finish in one session. The CAD 15 online test fee is separate from the licence fee. Passing online does not make you licensed or legally allowed to drive. You still visit a licensing office with two accepted IDs, confirmation of your pass and any applicable consent form or corrective lenses. Results last one year. Read the platform’s full eligibility and technical requirements rather than assuming online testing is available without conditions.
Keep the effective date separate from today. The GLP changes page announces that from October 19, 2026, eligible Class 7 novice or Class 7,8 novice licence holders with a clean driving record will use a Driving Record Assessment instead of a second road test to obtain a Class 5 licence with restrictions, followed by a 12-month restriction period. Eligibility includes a safe-driving period that varies by age and approved training, plus checks for specified convictions, prohibitions and suspensions. On October 8 the change is not yet effective. It does not exempt everyone from knowledge tests, first road tests or every foreign-licence exchange process. ICBC says second road tests scheduled on or after October 19 will be cancelled with emailed next steps; check which stage your appointment concerns.
Practise observable safe behaviour rather than relying on a promise that one missed shoulder check only loses points. ICBC’s 2022 preparation advice highlights posted limits, school and playground zones, shoulder checks when changing lanes, observation when turning, and all-around checks before parallel or reverse-stall parking. These are practice priorities, not proof of a fixed 27-item score sheet, a ranking of deductions or an allowance for dangerous actions. Use official guidance and instructor feedback across different conditions. You can ask the examiner to repeat or clarify an instruction; the examiner does not teach you to drive during the test.
Hill parking needs more than an uphill-outward/downhill-inward slogan. Tuning Up for Drivers, printed pages 44–45, assumes parking on the right of a two-way road: uphill with a curb, turn the front wheels left so the tire rests against the curb; downhill with a curb, or uphill/downhill without one, turn right to prevent rolling into traffic. Use the parking brake and appropriate gear as well. For parking on the left of a one-way street, the guide reverses left and right. Check slope, curb and side of the road before applying a wheel-direction rule.
Documents and vehicle readiness are separate from driving skill. The appointment preparation page requires primary and secondary ID, payment and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian plate. Problems with belts, lights, tires, glass or recalls can lead to cancellation. Only examiner and candidate may ride; translators, children and infants cannot accompany you. Recording devices are prohibited, GPS/navigation must be off, and driver-assistance features should be turned off where possible. Ask the examiner about an uncertain feature and check a replacement vehicle again.
Book directly through ICBC. It states that third-party booking sites are unaffiliated and sellers of test routes did not obtain those routes from ICBC. Give at least 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule or face a CAD 25 cancellation fee, which is not a universal road-test price. After an unsuccessful test, use your own official feedback to choose practice priorities. This guide concerns BC; another province requires its own system and handbook, not copied BC question counts, procedures or October changes.
