Almost every weekend in July, Toronto has free outdoor music, and this weekend (July 11–12) is especially busy: the Beaches International Jazz Festival brings a live stage to Woodbine Park in the east end, while St. Clair Avenue in Midtown closes off to become Canada’s biggest salsa party. Both are free — one leans toward laid-back listening, the other toward high-energy dancing — making for two completely different summer nights.

Beaches International Jazz Festival (free): One of Canada’s largest free jazz events, its official site stretches the festival across a full month (July 3–26), spread over several parks and neighbourhoods, with cumulative crowds counted in the hundreds of thousands. This weekend (July 10–12) the main action is at Woodbine Park in the east end, with main-stage performances and a beachside Latin segment on the same dates; the real highlight, though, is the late-month StreetFest — from July 23 to 25, Queen Street East between Woodbine and Beech closes off, the road clears at 6 p.m. and bands start at 7, running from jazz and soulful blues all the way to high-energy rock. BlogTO describes it as “hundreds of free concerts” down a single street, so if this weekend doesn’t work, the end of the month is even more worth planning around.
TD Salsa on St. Clair (free): The organizer calls it Canada’s largest salsa celebration. From July 11 to 12 it closes off the western stretch of St. Clair Avenue (Winona Dr to Christie St), with more than 350 Canadian and international performers and music spanning salsa, merengue, bachata and samba. Four “dance hot spots” let you jump in whenever; on Sunday there’s a cultural parade starting at St Clair and Winona, with an opening performance at 12:30 p.m. and groups representing more than a dozen countries including Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Mexico. The whole stretch is free to enter, so it works even if you’re bringing kids or don’t dance — you can simply eat and wander.
For transit, Salsa is the simplest — the 512 St. Clair streetcar takes you right there; Woodbine Park is a bit of a walk from the subway, so take the TTC and transfer to a bus, since weekends are busy and parking is tough. Worth noting: Toronto’s TTC monthly fare cap doesn’t start until September, so summer outings still run on the current fares.
And it’s not just these two that weekend: downtown at Nathan Phillips Square there’s the outdoor art fair (July 10–12), now in its 65th year, while the east end’s Gerrard India Bazaar hosts the TD South Asian Festival (July 11–12). To pack a full day, you can string these together along the TTC — all of them free.
