Canada’s 2026 World Cup transport measures have ended. Toronto and Vancouver both relied on public transport, walking hubs, temporary road controls and match-day service increases, but their stadium locations, connections and control areas differed. This article preserves official plans as a historical reference and does not describe 2026 road restrictions, service levels or entry routes as current. Toronto said event operations could occur on up to 22 operational days between June 11 and July 19, with measures varying by time and location. That did not mean a whole district was continuously closed for 39 days. The City also stated that public spectator parking would not be available at the stadium, Exhibition Place or nearby, so the event plan emphasized TTC, GO Transit, walking and planned pickup or drop-off arrangements. Toronto: several Exhibition Place hubs, not one route for everyone
The plan evaluated Exhibition GO, Fleet, Dufferin Gate, King and Union as distinct hubs. Exhibition GO was listed about 175 metres from the planned stadium access and 1.3 kilometres from the FIFA Fan Festival area near Fort York. Fleet was about 850 metres from the stadium and 400 metres from the Fan Festival. Dufferin Gate was about one kilometre from the stadium, but was not recommended as the main Fan Festival hub. TTC’s event service included added or adjusted 509 Harbourfront, 511 Bathurst, 29 Dufferin and 929 Dufferin Express service, plus an event 829 Dufferin Express. Temporary overnight service included 309 Harbourfront and 311 Bathurst. These were 2026 tournament operations, not permanent routes. Accordingly, “every ticket holder walked from Union Station” and “all of Exhibition Place was closed all day” are not accurate summaries of the official plan. Union was a more distant downtown hub in the plan. The useful station depended on the trip origin, whether the destination was the stadium or Fan Festival, that day’s controls and accessibility needs. Wheel-Trans, pickup areas and temporary walking paths had their own locations; general crowd directions did not replace accessible arrangements.
Vancouver: added service and the designated walking route were time-limited
TransLink’s 2026 plan designated Main Street–Science World as the main match-day walking-route hub and added capacity on the Expo, Millennium and Canada lines and selected buses. Service was extended by about one hour only on specified later match nights, not every night or throughout the tournament. HandyDART also had designated pickup and drop-off arrangements. Vancouver road and bus changes supported BC Place, the Fan Festival and crowd management and were temporary tournament measures. A vehicle restriction on one street during a specified period did not mean several kilometres of downtown were completely inaccessible. Pedestrians, businesses, residents, emergency services and different hours could be subject to different rules. A useful historical record identifies dates, hours and scope rather than retaining only the phrase road closure.
